When the Paint Isn't Flying, The Feathers Are

There's a whole lot of red and white feathers being tied up.

Just Ducky

Feather underpainting roughed in. It'll come off the easel for a few days, before some glazing
and final brushwork. Looking forward to the next canvas...back to fish, I think.

Eyeing the End

The wood duck as it sits today. The eye breathed some life into it.
There's still a lot of feather work to do, among other stuff, but its taking shape.

A Little Background

This duck was photographed by my brother in Nebraska.
It's Autumn there, but that's not like Autumn here, so I opted to change the background up
a bit to give the duck a more local northern frontier flavor.
It's coming along, but there's a lot of hours left.

Underneath It All

I always hesitate posting beginning stage pictures of new works.
The underpainting is the first of many layers, the first minutes of many hours,
the underlying foundation on which to build.
To block in color and get rid of the glaring white of the blank canvas.

Last Light

This one comes from a quick shot I snapped from the truck window while coming home from a fishing trip.

Big Better Flys

If you've ever fished an Ausable Wulff, Bomber or a Haystack,
then you've fished with part of Adirondack history.
Big, buggy and buoyant, they were specifically designed for fast turbulent water.
Created by Francis Betters, they epitomize fishing on the West Branch of the Ausable River.
Nestled next to Route 86, by the bridge, in Wilmington, NY, these sculptures stand over
the West Branch as a tribute and memorial to Fran Betters, an Adirondack legend.

You can learn more about the ongoing memorial project on their Facebook page.

Technicolor Mountains

The annual trip to the Adirondacks happened this past weekend.
The colors were pretty much at their peak, and exceptionally vivid this season, despite the dry conditions we've had all year.

Colors along the West Branch of the Ausable River

The view from atop Whiteface Mountain. Lake placid, Mirror Lake and the high peaks region.
